Presidents Corner

“Have fun, Share your Optimism, and Do Your Best!!”

This header is a direct quote from Governor Judy's growth contest.  That's what we are doing here in our club in Marshalltown, isn't it great!  The money we’ve raised is going to some great youth projects.  We have received thank you's from a $500 Scholarship winner, Anne Pilkington; Quakerdale for a $100 donation; and from Child Abuse prevention

Services.  We'll be passing these thank yous around at today’s club meeting.  It feels so great to be a part of an active club like ours, making such a difference in so many kids lives.

Be sure to sign up for working at the Junior Golf meet with Bob Wenner.  Those students can really get low golf scores!!  My golf score is like a bowling score and vice versa.  What talented youth we serve.  Remember on the 13th, next week, that we will be meeting at Elmwood and eating out!!  I'm sure we'll have great weather too!!

Thanks to all of you that showed up last week on Friday to share John and my joy at getting married. The wedding is coming up this weekend at Pine Lake, anyone can come as it is out at the Lake.  Go right from the spillway parking area along the walking path, past the picnic table and coffee cooking on the grill.  The time is a little after 5:00 am.  We want to have the ceremony end at sunrise, which is at 5:38 a.m.  I know you aren't morning optimists, but noon!!

Keep up the great work we've been doing this year and remember to . . .

Have fun, Share your Optimism, and Do Your Best!!

Optimistically Yours,

Mary Langbehn - President Marshalltown Optimist Club

Ridiculous Days

For the past several years - the Noon Optimist Club has sold ice cream during Ridiculous days on the Courthouse Square.  This year's Ridiculous days will be on Saturday, July 27th.  It is a great time to meet and talk to a number of friends as well as to shop for bargains.  There are benefits in that we are selling delicious Schwan's ice cream creations.  One has to have sampled the products to be a better salesperson.  If anyone wishes to help for 1-, 2-, or more hours - contact Bob Wenner:  (Business) 754-3590, (Home) 752-3302, or eMail bob.wenner@emersonprocess.com.

Needed Golf Assistant

Bob W. also needs a volunteer for next year to assist with golf. This someone then will be able to take over the committee chairmanship in the future.  This is a great opportunity to expand on some new skills under great guidance!!

We have a new Optimists Meet here sign we will be hanging at Best Western Regency with pride, look for it at the front entrance in the future.

What is your commitment to Optimism in the Iowa District?

Governor Judy has a growth contest running from May 18th-June 29th.  For each new member sponsored between those dates, the sponsors name will be placed in a drawing (example 5 members=5times in the drawing).  When all club Roster Adjustments have been received postmarked June 29th (are you catching that Sean?) ONE persons name will be drawn for a YEAR"S WORTH OF DUES PAID FOR THE 2002-2003 Optimist year!!

Youth Appreciation

Youth Appreciation was a great success and a wonderful recognition for the 5th graders.  Some of the teachers comments about these kids were:  “He comes to school each day ready to ‘give it his all.’  He is also great at showing respect to teachers and fellow students.  He is always very friendly and always does his best to follow instructions.”, and "I am very lucky to have this student in my class.  She is an excellent role-model.”  These kids will be great leaders and role models when they grow up.  We recognized the following students: Anson Elem - Lisa Ledford and Sam Velazquez their teacher is Meg Sponseller; GMG - Kelsey Sederburg and Brent Havelka, their teachers are Shelli Taylor and Jeri Hartwig; Rogers Elem -Chelsea Feldmann, teacher Mr. Tullis and Brad Holloway, teacher Mr. Hunkins ;West Marshall Middle School – Sarah Lyall, teacher is Ms. Vicki Strugel and Wade Billman, teacher is Mrs. Marcia Quick; Fisher Elem – Wayne Mohon, teacher is Todd Rosenberger and Ryan Rice, teacher is Sue Buchan; Franklin Elem -  Courtney Watts, teacher is Mrs. Bohnsack and Patrick Sharpshair, teacher is Sally Jansen; Hoglan Elem – Janie Bjorkman, teacher is Paul Henely and Katie Pins, teacher is Vicki McKibbin; Woodbury Elem – Lucero Sanchez, teacher is Kristin Alman and David Carbajal, teacher is Julie Finch.
